To have foster children in your home you must have a state license. There
is no fee for a foster care license.
The following are required to become a licensed foster parent;
- You must be 19 years or older and able to provide three favorable references.
- You must be able to show you are in good health.
- You must obey state traffic laws about child restraint systems and seat belts for
children.
- Private well water must meet state standards. The state pays for the water testing.
- You must provide each foster child with a bed.
- State fire codes must be met if licensed for 4 or more children.
- A state sanitarian will visit your home if you care for seven or more children.
Foster parent licenses are issued for two years. A renewal letter will be sent before
the license expires.
Being licensed does not mean that children will be placed in your home.
