Pharmacist Licensure

Becky Wisell
Administrator

Medical and Specialized Health

There are three methods of licensure to practice pharmacy in Nebraska:

  1. By Examination
  • a new pharmacy graduate who is not licensed in another state and wishes for Nebraska to be his/her state of original licensure;
  • for a pharmacist who does not meet the reciprocity requirements; or
  • foreign pharmacy graduate who is not licensed in the United States.
  1. By Score Transfer
  • This method is for a new graduate who will be obtaining his/her original licensure in another state, but will also become licensed in Nebraska within one year from the date he/she sits for the NAPLEX. It requires that the applicant request a Score Transfer through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) before he/she sits for the North American Pharmacist Licensing Examination (NAPLEX).
  1. By Reciprocity
  • This method requires that the applicant has been licensed and working in another state as a pharmacist OR enrolled in a residency program which requires a state license. The license must be from a state that offers reciprocity to Nebraska graduates (contact this office for reciprocity requirements from California).

All methods require that the applicant obtain a passing score of at least 75 on the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) for Nebraska. Applicants by Examination and Score Transfer must also obtain a passing score of at least 75 on the NAPLEX.

Foreign Pharmacy Graduates— must obtain the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Certification (FPGEC) through NABP. This certification requires passing the Test of Spoken English (TSE),   the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE). The graduate must then earn 1500 internship hours in the U.S.  Internship hours can be earned in a state other than Nebraska. If internship hours are earned in another state, those hours need to be transferred to Nebraska's Board of Pharmacy by the state's board. In order to earn internship hours in Nebraska, you must obtain a Pharmacist Intern Registration. Contact Licensure Unit at (402) 471-2118 for information on Pharmacist Internship Licensing.
