Funeral Directing and Embalming
Apprenticeship

Before you can become licensed as a Funeral Director and Embalmer, you must complete 12 months of supervised service as a funeral director and embalmer apprentice.

During the 12 months of supervised service as an appprentice, you must:

  • Arterially embalm 25 bodies and properly record such on Attachment B3 of the licensure pdf icon application; and
  • Assist with not less than 25 funerals and properly record such on Attachment B4 of the licensure pdf icon application.

Supervised service: The 12 months of service as an apprentice must be served under the instruction and supervision of a funeral director and embalmer licensed and practicing in the State of Nebraska. The first 25 embalmings and 25 funeral assists must be completed under the direct on-sight supervision of the supervising funeral director and embalmer; thereafter, student supervision shall mean the direct oversight or easy availability of the supervising funeral director and embalmer.

An applicant must receive written approval by the Licensing & Regulatory Affairs prior to beginning the service as an apprentice.

Apprenticeships can not be extended or renewed.

Apprentice Methods: The apprenticship can be served in 1 of the 2 methods as follows:

Method #1: Consecutive 12 month apprenticeship. The applicant must meet the following before beginning service:

  1. Completion of at least 39 semester hours of pre-mortuary college credit;
  2. Successful passage of the National Board Examination for Funeral Service;
  3. Graduation from an accredited school of mortuary science; and
  4. Submission of an apprentice application and fee.

OR

Method #2: A 12 month split apprenticeship - Serving 6 months of the supervised service as an apprentice prior to attending an accredited school of mortuary science and then completing the final 6 months following graduation from a school of mortuary science.

First 6 months: The applicant must meet the following before beginning the first six months of service:

  1. Completion of at least 39 semester hours of pre-mortuary college credit;
  2. Submission of an apprentice application and fee.

Final 6 months: The applicant must meet the following before beginning the final 6 months of supervised service:

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of mortuary science;
  2. Successful passage of the National Board Examination for Funeral Service; and
  3. Submit an apprentice final 6-months registration application to the Licensing & Regulatory Affairs Division (no additional fee is required to re-register).

Application Process: To apply for an apprentice registration, you must submit the following:

  1. pdf icon Application
  2. Fee: $50.00
  3. Proof of age of majority. A copy of your birth certificate, marriage license, drivers abstract, college or university transcript or other documentation which indicates your date of birth.
  4. Official transcript. The transcripts must be issued by the educational institution and stamped with an original school seal. Photocopies or notarized photocopies will not be accepted:
  • For 12 month consecutive apprenticeship: 1) Official transcripts which verify the college or university hours attained to meet the 39 semester hours of pre-mortuary education, and 2) an official transcript from an accredited school of mortuary science, which verifies the date of graduation. The transcripts must be issued by the educational institution and stamped with an original school seal.
  • For first 6 months of split apprenticeship: Official transcripts which verify the college or university hours attained to meet the 39 semester hours of pre-mortuary education;
  • For final 6 months of split apprenticeship: An official transcript from an accredited school of mortuary science, which verifies the date of graduation.
  1. Examination results. Prior to starting the 12 month consecutive apprenticeship or final 6 month apprenticeship, examination results sent directly from the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards.
