Funeral Directing and Embalming
Renewal Information
Expiration Date: All funeral directing and embalming licenses expire
2/1, of each even-numbered year.
Renewal Process: Notice of renewal is sent to each licensee approximately
90 days prior to the expiration date. It is important that your address is current with
our office in order to assure delivery of the renewal notice. To renew a license, you
must:
- Document 16 hours of approved continuing education (on the renewal form), earned within
the renewal period (to obtain a listing of approved continuing education contact Rita
Watson at (402) 471-2117 or by e-mail at: rita.watson@dhhs.ne.gov);
- Inform the Department of any misdemeanor/felony convictions or disciplinary actions
pending or taken in another state. For information relating to the documentation
that must be submitted, click here.
- Pay the renewal fee of $202.00.
Final Notice: Renewals not postmarked or received by 2/1 will be
sent a final notice. All final notices will be assessed a $25.00 late fee.
Revocation: Renewals not postmarked or received by 3/1 will be sent a
notice of revocation.
Continuing Education Waiver: The Department of
Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure, Licensing
& Regulatory Affairs Division, on the recommendation of the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, may
waive the continuing education requirements, in part or in total, for any 2-year licensing
period when a license holder submits documentation that circumstances beyond his or her
control prevented completion of such requirements. Such circumstances shall include
situations in which:
- The license holder holds a Nebraska license but is not practicing his or her profession
in Nebraska;
- The license holder has served in the regular armed forces of the United States during
part of the 24 months immediately preceding the license renewal date;
- The license holder has submitted proof that he or she was suffering from a serious or
disabling illness or physical disability which prevented completion of the required number
of continuing education hours during the 24 months immediately preceding the license
renewal date; and
- The license holder was first licensed within the 24 months immediately proceeding the
license renewal date.
Continuing Education Extension: For good cause shown, the board may
grant an extension of time during which the requirements imposed by Statutes Relating to Funeral
Directing and Embalming/Funeral Establishements (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 71-1347 to
71-1353), may be completed, but such extension of time shall not exceed one hundred twenty
days.
Inactive or Lapsed Status: A licensee may request that his/her license
be placed on inactive or lapsed status (this request can only occur at the time of
renewal). If you choose either inactive or lapsed status, you can not provide funeral
directing and embalming services.
- Inactive status means the voluntary termination of the right or privilege to represent
oneself as a funeral director and embalmer, but retains the right to represent himself or
herself as holding an inactive license. A $35.00 fee is required for this status.
- Lapsed status means the voluntary termination of the right or privilege to represent
oneself as a funeral director and embalmer. No fee is required.
Additional Information: See Statutes
Relating to Funeral Directing and Embalming/Funeral Establishements to find additional
information relating to the renewal, revocation and reinstatement process. |
