Medical Nutrition Therapy
Continuing Education
Continuing education means the offering of instruction or information to licensees for
the purpose of maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of medical
nutrition therapy. These programs may be offered under such names as "educational
courses", "clinic", "forum", "lecture", "training
programs" or "seminars". In order for continuing education to be
recognized/count for licensure renewal the Board of Medical
Nutrition Therapy must approve it. To be approved, an application must be submitted to the board for review.
Subject matter acceptable for continuing education credit is described, but not limited
to, the following:
- College courses from an approved graduate or undergraduate program clearly related to
maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of medical nutrition
therapy.
- Programs or presentations clearly related to maintaining skills necessary for the safe
and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy that have been approved for continuing
education credit by the CDR.
- Workshops, seminars, or conferences that clearly relate to maintaining skills necessary
for the safe and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Exhibits, poster sessions, or study groups that clearly relate to maintaining skills
necessary for the safe and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Food preparation clearly related to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and
competent practice of medical nutrition therapy that focuses on nutritional value.
- Nutrition with specialized populations clearly related to maintaining skills necessary
for the safe and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Assessment and treatment of various disorders clearly related to maintaining skills
necessary for the safe and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Food service systems management clearly related to maintaining skills necessary for the
safe and competent practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Homestudy programs relevant to one or more areas as specified in (2) through (8) of this
section, which clearly relate to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent
practice of medical nutrition therapy.
- Publications relevant to one or more areas as specified in (2) through (8) of this
section, which clearly relate to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent
practice of medical nutrition therapy.
Examples of nonacceptable subject matter include, but are not limited to the following:
- Menu planning.
- Dietetic association business meeting or delegate report.
- Cooking or baking demonstrations.
- Food service sanitation.
- Catering.
- Garnishing techniques.
- Publishing an employee-training manual.
- Sales presentation on a company's new product.
Continuing education hour or credit means 60 minutes of participation.
- Academic Credit
- 1 semester hour = 15 c.e. hours
- 1 semester hour audited = 8 c.e hours
- 1 quarter hour = 10 c.e hours
- 1 quarter hour audited = 5 c.e.hours
- 1 trimester hour = 14 c.e. hours
- 1 trimester hour audited = 7 c.e. hours
- Exhibits - 25 exhibits = 1 continuing education hour; a
limit of 6 continuing education credit hours per biennium may be obtained through
exhibits;
- Poster Sessions - 6 poster sessions = 1 continuing
education hour; a limit of 10 continuing education credit hours per biennium may be
obtained through poster sessions; and
- Homestudy programs - may accumulate up to 15 hours of
continuing education per biennial renewal period;
- Publications - may accumulate up to 20 hours of
continuing education per biennial renewal period.
