Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse
Nurse License Compact Act

The pdf icon Nurse License Compact Act became effective in Nebraska on 1/1/01. States that have enacted the Nurse License Compact Act are compact state. The Act provides for a mutual recognition licensing system that enables a nurse to hold a multi-state license in his/her state of residency provided the state is a member of the Nurse License Compact. Under mutual recognition a nurse with a multi-state license in a compact state may practice in any compact state, whether physical or electronic, unless the nurse is under discipline or a monitoring agreement that restricts practice across state lines. The nurse must follow the laws and regulations of the state in which he/she practices. Nurses, who are not under discipline, who declare Nebraska as their primary state of residence are issued a multi-state license. Nurses who wish to practice in Nebraska and whose primary state of residence is a non-compact state will be issued a Nebraska single-state license. A nurse may hold only one multi-state license from a compact state at a time.

Employers wishing to verify license status for nurses whose primary state of residence and state of licensure is another compact state, should contact the Nebraska Board of Nursing office at (402) 471-4376 and we will assist you.
