DHHS Emergency Preparedness
Strategic National Stockpile
The Strategic
National Stockpile (SNS) is a national resource of medical supplies ready and
waiting to help states handle public health emergencies. It includes pharmaceuticals,
medical supplies and medical equipment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) has these stockpiles located around the country so states can have
access to the supplies they need within 12 hours of requesting them.
DHHS' Role
Receiving, shipping and storing the stockpile is a complex
operation involving a lot of people from DHHS, other state agencies and the federal
government as well. At DHHS weve recruited approximately 40 people to help with the
process and are always looking for more volunteers. Among other duties, our employees are
responsible for unloading the shipment, managing inventory, maintaining quality control,
and repackaging supplies for further distribution.
The SNS Program is an essential response component of CDC's larger
Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Initiative. For more information, see the CDC Public Health Emergency
Preparedness and Response Website. |
