Proclamation.jpg (263251 bytes)National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week was first publicized and promoted as a national event by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness in 1988.  Hundreds of schools, agencies, and organizations in the country participate in a week of fasts, sleep outs, educational forums and speakers, canned food drives, and fundraisers.  Hunger and Homelessness Week is the week prior to Thanksgiving each year.  As many sit down for Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends and give thanks for their bounty, we are reminded that there are many that live with hunger and without homes.

The purpose of the national Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is to raise awareness of and action on the problems of hunger and homelessness both locally and statewide.   The week promotes both thought and action on an issue that otherwise might escape public attention and national recognition.  Hunger and homelessness continue to be serious problems for many individuals and families in our country.  Individuals and communities across Nebraska participate in activities throughout the week to raise awareness and gather resources for individuals and families living in poverty.

On November 15, 2006, Governor Heineman signed a proclamation declaring November 12 through the 18th Nebraska Hunger and Homeless Week.  Individuals from across the state who work with individuals and families who are hungry and homeless attended the proclamation signing.
