Walk To School

About:
Walk to School programming is an opportunity to make walking and bicycling to school safer for children and to increase the number of children who choose to walk and bicycle. These programs can enhance children’s health and well-being, ease traffic congestion near the school, improve air quality, and improve community members’ overall quality of life.

The month of October is designated as International Walk to School month, with the first Wednesday of October highlighted as Walk to School day. This is an easily implemented, low or no-cost physical activity program in which communities, businesses, schools, children, and parents can take part. Start planning your event now!

Goals:

  • Encourage adults to teach children safe pedestrian behavior,

  • Have adults help children identify and practice safe routes to school,

  • Remind everyone of the tremendous health benefits of regular, daily walking,

  • Create awareness of how walkable a community is (or isn’t) and where improvements can be made,

  • Encourage youth to actively commute to school.
