Nebraska Women's Health Statistics

DEMOGRAPHICS
  • Women represent 51% of Nebraska's overall population and 58% of Nebraska's 65 and older population.
  • 55.5% of Nebraska women are married.
  • Nebraska Women rank 4th in the Nation for high school graduation rates.
  • 13% of all Nebraska women had incomes at or below federal poverty guidelines in 2004-05.
  • As of 2004, 70.3% of Nebraska women reside in urban areas, and 29.7% live in rural areas.
  • Median annual earnings for women in 2004 were $25,000, compared to $29,200 on average for U.S. women
  • 16.7 % of non-elderly women were uninsured in 2006.
  • There were 26,144 live births in 2005.
  • Women, ages 20-29 accounted for 57.1% of all live births, 32.75% for women 30-39, 8.3% for teenaged women, and 1.9%  for women 40+
  • Low birth weight (babies weighing less than 5.5 pounds) rates were 72.02 per 1,000 in 2005.
  • Very low birth weight (babies weighing less than 3.3 pounds) rates were 14.34 per 1,000 live birth in 2005.
  • 8,055 live births were recorded in 2005 among unmarried women, up from 7,680 in 2003.
CHRONIC DISEASE
  • 31% of women reported having arthritis in 2005.
  • 10.9% of women reported that they have been diagnosed with asthma in 2005
  • The rate of AIDS for Nebraska women was 1.91 per 100,000 women, compared to 9.1 per 100,000 women in the U.S. in 2005
  • 34.7 percent of women report having poor mental health in the last 30 days in 2004,
  • Genital Herpes rates increased 34.3% from 67.4 (per 100,000 people) in 2004 to 90.9 (per 100,000) in 2005.
  • 33.4% of Women who have ever been diagnosed with high cholesterol, in 2005
  • 24.2% of women who have ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure, in 2005

BEHAVIORAL RISK FACTORS

  • 12.2 % of women report having 5 or more drinks (binge-drinking) on one or more occasions during the past month.
  • 17.8 % of women report smoking every day or some days.
  • 24.5 % of women reported eating fruits and vegetables five or more times per day, in 2005
  • 78.4 % of women report having participated in physical activity in the last month (2006).
  • 30.1% of Women reported being overweight (bmi 25-29.9) and 26.7% reported being obese (bmi 30.0-99.8) in 2006.   

PREVENTION

  • 73.3 % of women 40+ report having had a mammogram within the past two years in 2006.
  • Currently, 37 states rank higher than Nebraska in the percentage of women who receive mammograms.
  • 81.6% of women 18+ reported receiving Pap smears within the past three years in 2006.
  • Currently, Nebraska ranks 42nd in the nation for Pap testing percentages.
  • 53.2% of women report having a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy in 2006.
