Your Rights as a Consumer
HIPAA laws give you several legal rights. You should become familiar with them,
and exercise those rights when necessary.
These are taken from Part §164.520 (b).(1).(iv), "Individual Rights"
section.
- The right to request restrictions on certain uses and disclosures of
Protected Health Information,
- The right to receive confidential communications of Protected Health Information,
- The right to inspect and copy Protected Health
Information,
- The right to amend Protected Health Information,
- The right to receive an accounting of disclosures of Protected Health
Information,
- The right to obtain a paper copy of the Privacy
Notice from the covered entity (DHHS) upon request.
In addition,
- Right to make complaint to the covered entity (Nebraska DHHS) and the Secretary of U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, regarding privacy rights violations. Click
