HIPAA Privacy & Security 1. Consumer Section: Your Rights as a Consumer HIPAA laws give you several legal rights.  You should become familiar with them, and exercise those rights when necessary. These are taken from Part §164.520 (b).(1).(iv), "Individual Rights" section. The right to request restrictions on certain uses and disclosures of Protected Health Information, The right to receive confidential communications of Protected Health Information, The right to inspect and copy Protected Health Information, The right to amend Protected Health Information, The right to receive an accounting of disclosures of Protected Health Information, The right to obtain a paper copy of the Privacy Notice from the covered entity (DHHS) upon request. In addition, Right to make complaint to the covered entity (Nebraska DHHS) and the Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, regarding privacy rights violations.  Click here to go to the page to file complaints.
