Evaluation of the Fall-Related Injury Prevention Projects
2004 Report on
Unintentional Fall Related Injuries
Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury resulting
in hospital treatment for children? More than 80 percent of fall related injuries occur in
the home. The majority of falls occur from furniture, stairs, baby walkers, playground
equipment, windows and shopping carts.
Keep young children safe and healthy by following these tips from Safe Kids Nebraska:
* Do not use baby walkers. They account for more injuries than any
other nursery product. Use a stationary activity center.
* Never leave young children alone on changing tables, beds, sofas or
other furniture or in a child safety seat that is placed on a high surface.
* Always strap children into highchairs, swings and strollers.
* Install window guards on all windows unless designated as emergency
fire exits.
* Never let children play alone on fire escapes, high porches or
balconies.
* Secure rugs with non-slip backing.
* Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
* Never let kids play on stairs.
* Keep hallways and stairs well-lit and clutter free.
* Avoid asphalt, concrete, grass and soil surfaces under playground equipment.
Supervise young children at all times.
