Senior Care Options Program

Senior Care Options is Nebraska’s nursing facility preadmission screening program. When a Medicaid-eligible person age 65 or older is considering a move to a nursing home, or an older person living in a nursing home applies for Medicaid, a Senior Care Options counselor becomes involved. These counselors are available at each PDF Area Agency on Aging.

The counselor gathers information on the older person’s care needs. This may include a visit with the older person, family members, other caregivers, and/or review of medical records.  Information on the person’s ability to do "activities of daily living" (for example, bathing, eating, transferring), risk factors, medical care, and mental condition are reviewed. The counselor then determines whether Medicaid will pay for the requested nursing facility care.

A person who qualifies for this care may instead choose to explore in-home service options available through the Aged and Disabled Medicaid Waiver. The goal of the program is to provide "the right care at the right time."
