Office of Minority Health & Health Equity

History

1992:
The Minority Health Status Report was published, which helped start a Minority Health Office within the Nebraska Department of Health Bureau of Health Policy and Planning. The report said that the Nebraska population was healthy, but its racial/ethnic minority populations were not.

1996:
The Minority Health Status Report was updated. It said that the health status of Nebraska’s racial/ethnic minority populations was still poor.

1997:
The Nebraska Department of Health was reorganized, and became Nebraska Health and Human Services System (NHHSS). NHHSS was made up of three pieces: the Department of Health and Human Services; the Department of Finance and Support; and the Department of Regulation and Licensure. The Office of Minority Health became part of Regulation and Licensure.

The Office of Minority Health had an Administrator, Program Analyst, and Administrative Assistant.

2000:
A new position was added to the Office of Minority Health to help build stronger relationships with Nebraska’s four Native American Tribes - the Omaha nation, the Winnebago nation, the Santee-Sioux nation, and the Ponca nation. The new position is called Native American Health Liaison.

2001:
Nebraska’s Unicameral passed LB692, which added offices and program staff in all three Congressional Districts to the Office of Minority Health. Offices were put in Lincoln, Omaha, and Lexington.

LB692 also used some of the Tobacco Settlement Funds to create the Minority Health Initiative. The funds targeted infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and asthma. Grant awards are available every two years.

2005:
The Office of Minority Health was awarded the first Federal grant in its history – the State Partnership Grant Program to Improve Minority Health.

2006:
The Office of Minority Health Strategic Plan was published at the annual Minority Health Conference.

2007:
The Office of Minority Health is now staffed with an Administrator, Native American Health Liaison, Health Surveillance Specialist, two Administrative Assistants, and Program Managers and Community Health Educators for each Congressional District.
