DHHS Offers Suggestions in Wake of Shooting
Lincoln The Department of Health and Human Services offers suggestions on
dealing with strong emotions as an aftermath of the tragic shootings at Westroads Mall in
Omaha.
"My heart goes out to the families of the victims," said Scot Adams, director
of the Division of Behavioral Health. "We know that many shoppers were at Westroads
today. People may be surprised by how intense and changing their emotions can be."
Adams said its normal for people to have a wide variety of reactions after this
type of disturbing and tragic event, ranging from being scared and anxious to having sleep
problems. He urged anyone who was at Westroads today to talk to someone if they are
feeling ovewhelmed.
Mental health officials say that being available to help others who may have
experienced a loss is important, and that many people in distress appreciate someone
listening to them.
Anyone experiencing a severe emotional reaction to the shooting could contact the
Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare crisis center toll free at 1-866-734-8888 or at 996-8332
locally. Other mental health providers are listed in the yellow pages of the Omaha phone
book. |
