West Kearney High School Receives Grant

Lincoln - The Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center at Kearney (YRTC-K) is receiving a $5,523 grant from the Nebraska Arts Council to help support its West Kearney High School residency project with Norris Chee until May of this year. The YRTC-K is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

"Norris Chee is a professional artist in the Navajo tradition," said KrisAnn Sullivan, art teacher at the YRTC-K. "He’s been our school’s adopted artist for the past 20 years. Both students and staff have benefited from the opportunity to work with him and to follow his professional career as an artist."

West Kearney High School is a year-round, on-campus special purpose junior and senior high school that’s operated by the YRTC-K. It is accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education and the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.

Nebraska Arts Council’s (NAC) Executive Director, Suzanne Wise, commended project director KrisAnn Sullivan for West Kearney High School programs.

"The Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center does an outstanding job providing arts activities for their youth. It is through fine organizations like this that Nebraska’s children receive a better education in the arts, and the quality of life is improved for all Nebraskans," she said.

The Nebraska Arts Council grants monetary resources to Nebraska’s nonprofit organizations for art projects and programs in communities throughout the state. This financial support is made possible by funds appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature and through competitive grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Nebraskans wishing to learn more about these and other grants can visit the NAC website at www.nebraskaartscouncil.org
