HHSS Hires Deputy Chief Medical Officer

http://www.hhss.ne.gov/audio/Lincoln Dr. Joseph Acierno, an attorney and physician from Omaha, is the Nebraska Health and Human Services Systems (HHSS) new Deputy Chief Medical Officer.
"Were very fortunate to have someone like Dr. Acierno join our public health team," said Dr. Joann Schaefer, Chief Medical Officer for HHSS. "Hes a unique combination with both medical and law degrees. Dr. Acierno understands the health side of things as well as the regulatory side and has the expertise to find that delicate balance."
Dr. Acierno, 45, received his medical and law degrees from Creighton University as well as his undergraduate degree. Currently, Dr. Acierno is an attorney in the Regulation and Licensure section of HHSS Legal Services Division. He was also an emergency department physician at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha.
"Im excited about my new role," said Dr. Acierno. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a perfect blend of my medical and legal background. My experience in both fields will help make sure Nebraskans are cared for safely and health care providers are treated fairly."
Dr. Acierno will be involved with the states health regulations, investigations, health information technology and the Child Death Review Team along with other projects.
Dr. Acierno starts his new position immediately.
