Lead Screening Clinics for Toys to be held in York and Seward

Lincoln—Clinics for screening lead content of toys will be held on Saturday, November 3, in York and Seward.

Parents can bring in up to five toys to be screened for lead. The toys can be plastic, wood or metal, painted or unpainted.

At the clinic, toys will be screened using an instrument that reads lead in paint. There are limitations to the ability of the equipment, and the public should be aware that this clinic is a screening and an opportunity to talk to trained staff. If a toy should screen high, meaning the lead appears to exceed a safe level, the toy will be referred to the Consumer Product Safety Commission for follow-up. A recommendation for a blood test will be made to parents whose children handled the toy.

Lead poisoning can cause behavioral problems, lower IQs, impair development, and hearing loss in children.

The York clinic will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 2101 N. Lincoln Ave.

The Seward clinic will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Seward Family Medical Center, 250 N. Columbia Ave.

The tests are free. The clinics are sponsored by the Four Corners Health Department, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, the Seward and York County Extension Offices, Butler County Health Care Center, the Polk County Health Department, and the York County Health Coalition.
