April is Public Health Month
LincolnGovernor Dave Heineman has declared April as Public Health Month. This
years focus is wellness, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human
Services.
Wellness is all about adopting behaviors which promote health and prolong life, said
Dr. Joseph Acierno, the states Deputy Chief Medical Officer.
"Being active, eating the right foods like fruits and vegetables, and not smoking
can improve your health and add years to your life," Dr. Acierno said.
Take the stairs, do housework and yardwork, play with your kids outside, and take the
dog for a walkthese are things that can contribute to your activity level.
"Despite all of the information out there, two-thirds of adults today are
overweight or obese, and over 10 million children are obese. Try to be active for at least
15 minutes every day and eat a balanced diet," said Dr. Linda Lazure, Ph.D, R.N.,
chair of the State Board of Health.
"Today is the perfect day to start taking care of your physical and mental
well-being. If you have a bad day, just commit to doing it better tomorrow," Dr.
Lazure said. "There are also steps that families, businesses and communities can take
to build a culture of wellness in Nebraska that will help everyone lead healthier
lives."
"If you smoke, quitting can be the most important thing you can do for your
health. Tobacco use is related to heart disease and cancer," Dr. Acierno said.
"The Nebraska Tobacco Quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669 ) can help
you."
Public health can help people live longer, healthier lives.
