Background:

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths (after lung cancer) in the U.S. Regular colon cancer screening can make a dramatic difference; however, Nebraska has one of the lowest screening rates in the country. Approximately 920 new diagnoses and 350 deaths occurred in Nebraska last year.

The "Stay in the Game – Get Screened for Colon Cancer" promotion is an effort to educate Nebraskans over age 50 to have regular screenings for colon cancer. Over the next year, messages about colon cancer screening will be provided at each Husker football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball game. Promotion will also take place through print media, television, and radio.

Media are invited to the kick-off rally, where Jerry Tagge and other dignitaries will speak about the campaign and the importance of colon cancer screening.

Event will also include refreshments, prizes and stadium tours.
