is WIC?
W-I-C: Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants
and Children
- WIC
is a public health nutrition program established in 1972
- This
federally funded program was established to improve nutrition in pregnancy and early
childhood
- WIC
serves pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children under age five that are
considered at nutritional risk
- WIC
provides services at no cost to clients including:

nutrition and health
education
-
breastfeeding education,
promotion, and support

supplemental foods
-
referrals for other
services that may be needed
- This
combination of education, nutritious foods, and referrals allows WIC to make a positive
difference during critical times of growth and development
- WIC
nurses and nutritionists provide nutrition and health screenings, education, and advice
- Nebraska
WIC Program serves about 41,000 women and children each month
- There
are about 120 WIC clinic sites in Nebraska
- WIC
clients shop for WIC foods at over 400 WIC approved stores in Nebraska
- The
WIC foods provided are good sources of nutrients that are frequently lacking in the diets
of the WIC women and children.
