What is WIC?


 W-I-C:  Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children

  • WIC is a public health nutrition program established in 1972
  • This federally funded program was established to improve nutrition in pregnancy and early childhood
  • WIC serves pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children under age five that are considered at nutritional risk
  • WIC provides services at no cost to clients including:

-          nutrition and health education

-          breastfeeding education, promotion, and support

-          supplemental foods

-          referrals for other services that may be needed

  • This combination of education, nutritious foods, and referrals allows WIC to make a positive difference during critical times of growth and development
  • WIC nurses and nutritionists provide nutrition and health screenings, education, and advice
  • Nebraska WIC Program serves about 41,000 women and children each month
  • There are about 120 WIC clinic sites in Nebraska
  • WIC clients shop for WIC foods at over 400 WIC approved stores in Nebraska
  • The WIC foods provided are good sources of nutrients that are frequently lacking in the diets of the WIC women and children.
