Emergency Preparedness and Response Program
The Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Radiological Health staff are trained to respond to accidents or incidents involving radioactive materials. These emergencies can span a range of possibilities from an unexpected radiation release at a nuclear power plant, lost radiographic source or transportation accident. Emergency response, decontamination procedures and dose assessment are included in training for staff.
Staff also participate in an annual drill and exercise at each of the nuclear power stations in Nebraska. Several Nebraska state agencies, agencies from other states, federal agencies and local agencies participate in the drills/exercise. These drills/exercises insure that emergency plans work effectively.
Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station is operated by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) and Cooper Nuclear Station is operated by Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD).
