Radon Awareness and Risk Reduction Mini-Grant Projects

To Be Undertaken During the Fall, 2008 to Spring, 2009

Central District Health Department
(serving Hall, Hamilton, and Merrick counties)

CDHD will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by releasing Public Service Announcements and distributing information.  As part of this campaign, free radon test kits will be distributed to area residents, and further information about additional testing or mitigation will be distributed as needed.  For more information, contact Jeremy Collinson at 308/385-5175 or visit the CDHD website at http://www.cdhd.ne.gov/home.lasso.

East Central District Health Department
(serving Boone, Colfax, Nance and Platte counties) 

ECDHD will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by setting up billboards, releasing Public Service Announcements, distributing information, and holding radon educational programs for area realtors (offering continuing education credit) and students.  ECDHD will also hold a local radon poster contest, which will tie into upcoming State and National poster contests.  As part of this campaign, free radon test kits will be distributed to area residents, and further information about additional testing or mitigation will be distributed as needed.  For more information, contact Roberta Miksch at 402/563-9656 or visit the ECDHD website at http://www.eastcentraldistricthealth.com/index.asp.

Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department
(serving Burt, Cuming, Madison, and Stanton counties)

ELVPHD will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by conducting presentations (including offering a continuing education course for area realtors), distributing information, and maintaining a presence at area health fairs and home shows, in addition to press releases.  Additionally, ELVPHD will seek to increase awareness of Radon Resistant New Construction by offering a program to building sciences students at Northeast Community College.  As part of this campaign, free radon test kits will be distributed to area residents, and further information about additional testing or mitigation will be distributed as needed.  For more information, contact Kathy Nordby at 402/529-2233 or visit the ELVPHD website at http://www.elvphd.org/

Loup Basin Public Health Department
(serving Blaine, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Howard,  Loup, Sherman, Valley, and Wheeler counties) 

LBPHD plans to provide radon education and free test kits at 5 community health forums this year, utilizing two radio stations to run PSA’s.  In addition, LBPHD is partnering with three local County Extension offices to help provide a local contact for radon information and kits; and will send out news releases and use other media to inform the public about the local program.   For more information, please contact Mary Drudik at 308/346-5795 or visit the website at: http://www.loupbasinhealth.com/.

North Central District Health Department
(serving Antelope, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, Knox, Pierce, and Rock counties)

NCDHD will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by distributing information, maintaining a presence at area health fairs and home shows, and making visits to those communities within the service area with no scheduled health fair or other event.  NCDHD will also promote the National Radon Poster contest in area schools, maintain the inter-library loan system, and distribute press releases.  As part of this campaign, free radon test kits will be distributed to area residents, and further information about additional testing or mitigation will be distributed as needed.  For more information, call Peggy Hart at 402/336-2406 or visit the website at www.ncdhd.ne.gov.

Panhandle Public Health District
(serving Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Sioux, and Sheridan counties)

PPHD will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by distributing information and free radon test kits via a podcast from their website, news releases, and maintaining a presence at area health fairs and home shows.  PPHD also plans to hold a local radon poster contest, complete with incentives to participate and prizes for local winners.  The focus on schools resumes this year with continued use of the Radon Resource CD created for area teachers.  For more information, contact Jessica Davies at 308/487-3600 or visit the website at http://www.pphd.org/index.html.

Sarpy/Cass Department of Health and Wellness
(serving Sarpy and Cass counties)

SCDHW will seek to increase radon awareness in their service area by distributing information and radon test kits to area residents, particularly those in targeted zip codes.  SCDHW will also work to contact at least 15 local real estate companies to encourage testing during a real estate transaction.  The office will use local media, including press releases, to inform area residents about the local program.   For more information, contact Jenny Steventon at 402/339-4334 or visit the website at http://www.sarpy.com/health/.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department
(serving Chase, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Hayes, Hitchcock, Perkins, and Red Willow counties)

SNPHD plans to increase radon awareness by distributing free radon test kits and radon information to area residents, with specific information on additional testing and mitigation systems as necessary.  In addition, SNPHD will target zoning boards and governing bodies to educate officials on the benefits of Radon Resistant New Construction (RRNC).  SNPHD also plans to take the unique step of obtaining radon measurement licenses and offering radon measurements to area residents on a sliding fee scale.   For more information, contact Mark Graf at 308/345-4233 or visit the website at http://www.swhealthdept.com/.

Three Rivers Public Health Department
(serving Dodge, Saunders, and Washington counties)
